The research, completed as part of scientist Carolyn Ewers’ PhD project, will be released as part of the Australian Marine Sciences Association Conference, hosted by Deakin at its Waterfront Geelong campus next month.

The scientists, from the Centre for Integrative Ecology, within Deakin’s School of Life and Environmental Sciences, argue the carbon is under threat of being lost without proper planning ahead of coastal development.

Lead researcher and marine ecologist Dr Peter Macreadie said blue carbon was one of Victoria’s best kept secrets, with habitats invisibly offsetting large quantities of greenhouse gases.
