Living creatures – While surveying Acacia Trees on a tropical biology course in Kenya we were lucky enough to spot a Chameleon moving between the branches.
Landscapes and seascapes – Early Bird. The sun rises over Avila Beach, California, as local fishermen make their way out to sea.
Fieldwork/Ecologists in Action – What are you looking at? Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua) at Volunteer Point, The Falkland Islands (Isla Malvinas)
Landscapes and seascapes – Crozet Island, Southern Ocean. In a few islands of the Southern Ocean, the wind is that strong that no tree can grow up, resulting in very sharp landscapes.
Living creatures – Frogs are fun – it’s a well-known fact. Heathcote is a dry place at the best of times, and it’s now entering the peak of summer. This individual is probably guarding some of the last remaining water in the area, stored in its own personal water-tank.
Best fieldwork/ecologists in action photo by Laetitia Kernaleguen: All is a matter of scale. Crozet Island, Southern Ocean. Catching wandering albatross chicks.
Best living creatures photo by Travis Knox: The Three Kings. King Penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) at the Falkland Islands (Isla Malvinas).
Fieldwork/Ecologists in action – Professor and senior PhD student work their butt off to make traps for goose catch
Living creatures – An opalescent nudibranch (Hermissenda crassicornis) crawls among a meadow of strawberry anemones (Corynactis californica) on pier pilings in Avila Beach, California.
Living creatures – Dreghorn Cattle Station, Charters Towers – QLD. The Great Bowerbird (Ptilonorhyncus nuchalis) builds the largest bower of the bowerbird family (up to 1m long). In this photo, the male was working on his bower, by rearranging some twigs (and not really caring about the presence of the photographer).
Living creatures – Heathcote can be an unforgiving and harsh environment – you have to be tough to survive. ‘Portrait of a lizard’ captures the strong but weary spirit of this long-term resident in stark black and white, it’s scales as rough as the Ironbark to which is clings.
Landscapes and seascapes – Every night while on a tropical biology course in Kenya we were treated to amazing sunsets.
